The biggest superpower of the Akai MPC Live, Live 2, One, and X is their absolute standalone portability. However, leaving your studio computer behind usually means leaving your favorite, expensive desktop VST plugins behind too.
Fortunately, you don't have to choose between mobility and your favorite synth patches. Akai built a powerful, native feature into the MPC ecosystem called the Auto Sampler. This tool automatically plays, records, and maps any desktop software instrument, turning heavy VSTs into lightweight, standalone Keygroup programs you can take anywhere.
💡 WHY AUTO-SAMPLING RULES: Traditional manual sampling takes hours of recording, cropping, and root-note mapping. The MPC Auto Sampler finishes the entire complex process automatically in just a few minutes.
How to Use the MPC Auto Sampler (5 Steps)
Connect your MPC hardware to your computer using a USB cable. Fire up the desktop MPC Software, load the third-party VST plugin you want to capture onto a MIDI track, and dial in your target instrument preset patch.
On your MPC touchscreen hardware, click the main Menu button. Locate and tap the Auto Sampler icon option to open up the main configuration dashboard layout panel.
Set your tracking parameters to balance sound quality with internal memory spacing targets:
- Note Range: Set your start and end notes (e.g., C1 to C6).
- Note Stride: Set this to 6. (This samples every 6th semitone, saving massive RAM).
- Velocity Layers: Set to 1 or 2 layers depending on patch dynamics.
- Note Length: Set to 3-4 seconds for natural sustain playback.
- Tail: Set to 2-3 seconds so reverb or delay tails don't clip off abruptly.
Name your target standalone program folder cleanly. Click the Do It button on the bottom right of the screen layout. Sit back while the MPC automatically sends MIDI notes, captures the audio responses, and crops the samples.
Once finished, save the newly generated Keygroup program directory directly onto your connected internal SSD, SD card, or USB flash drive. Unplug the laptop, boot into Standalone mode, and load up your premium custom VST instrument anywhere.
